Eritrean troops cross into Ethiopia's Tigray, raising the risk of war between the two

Eritrean troops crossed into northern Ethiopia this week, with residents reporting convoys in the town of Adigrat on Wednesday, according to the BBC and Reuters. Conflict monitor ACLED said Ethiopian military drones then targeted Eritrean troops near Adigrat as they moved toward Idaga Hamus; Ethiopia has not said it carried out the strikes.

The crossing follows a rapid slide. Ethiopia expelled Eritrean diplomats and closed its embassy in Asmara, and Eritrea cut ties; fighting in Tigray resumed in late September, and government and allied forces entered the regional capital Mekelle at the weekend after the Tigray People's Liberation Front withdrew.

"All foreign military forces operating within our sovereign territory must withdraw immediately," said Ethiopia's government communication minister, Enatalem Melese. Eritrea's information minister said his government was "not in the business of refuting wild allegations or narratives."
